Entertainment of a different type

Lately, there’s been a lot of videos posted. Now, don’t get me wrong, I like videos, but they’re sort of a cop-out — a bunch of instant entertainment, <blatant generalization> you don’t even need to think about ‘em </blatant generalization>. Luckily, I have a several links to bring a little balance to things!

First off, have you ever wanted to know one special fact about every number from 0 to 9999? Well, (even though I suspect everyone reading that question mentally mouthed “no”) today is your lucky day! Check out “What’s Special About This Number?

Then again, there’s those nutjobs worried about 6/6/06. I think at 06:06:06 on 6/6/06 I’ll be sacrificing a goat (my regular Tuesday activity), just to make a statement. They do make one good point though:

As one contributor to Arianna Huffington’s blog pointed out last week, F is the sixth letter of the alphabet, O is the 15th letter (1+5=6) and X is the 24th letter (2+4=6). Could Fox be the studio of the Beast?

To finish off, I must mention one last interesting tidbit. This article from New Scientist SPACE mentions a new take on the big bang, utilzing concepts from stringThe Big Bang theory. Rather than one “big bang” being the beginning of time, as is the generally accepted version of the big bang theory, the article proposes that time existed before the big bang, and that there has been a cycle of big bangs and “big crunches” bringing the conditions in the universe to where they are today.

Don’t get me wrong, I can barely tell string theory from a ball of twine, but I thought this was interesting. Also, check out this interview with Leonard Susskind, the inventor of string theory. It brings up the issues with the cosmological constant that this new-and-improved big bang theory aims to address.
